Great pleasure to collaborate at this project designed by Pablo Delcan "The NYC Probation's literary magazine, Free Verse. It's a labor of love for its editors – NYC Probation Poet-in-Residence, Dave Johnson + NYC Probation, Chief of Civic Innovation, @lonnijtanner. The 86-page mag features poems by staff, clients, family, friends, and neighbors from every borough, every walk of life, every age, and every job – all touched by the criminal justice system. But you won't know who is who. In these pages, everyone is equal. Paid writing apprentices “work” the probation centers to encourage those waiting for services, to write, which serves as a calming and skill-building tool. A record 2,200 submissions came in. The 6th issue includes illustrations by Annie Jen, Javier Jaén, Adam Maida, Cristiana Couceiro, Alvaro Dominguez & Edel Rodriguez. / @nyc_probation "

The poem I illustrate was written by Nicole Goodwin:
